Under Load
The noise reached its current pitch somewhere in the deserts of West Texas. Driving dynamics were unchanged; it was worst around 45 mph. Maja was sleeping against the window. My eyes were fixed on a road illuminated by high beams. No town lights shone in any direction.
Across the border in New Mexico we entered BLM land and cattle ranches. At low speeds the grinding continued. I looked over the dark blue hood as the road turned to large round stones. Mountains began rising to the north. From our camp at night, our fire was the only light to be seen.
Climbing into the Organ Mountains with the vehicle under load, the drone filled all auditory space inside the cabin. We would camp under the spires, cold and holding light snow.
