Longonot

The handle bars jerk without warning and my arms race to correct the steering. Periodically scattered amongst the dirt these sand tracks add effort. We keep between the tall fences that weave through an open grassland. Nothing beyond the barrier grows taller than my ankles.

Rising from the savanna is the green mass of Mount Longonot. The ranger at the park office is wearing a neat green uniform and calmly states the price to enter the park. An additional amount would also be required to pitch our tents in the sanctioned area which lies 50 or so yards past the large gate blocking our way.

Taylor and I agree to field other offers. There is a series of one-story buildings opposite the park infrastructure, where ten or so locals of various ages were scattered about. Several adults redirect our inquiries towards the teenager selling soft drinks and candy. She too needs more confirmation. We order beef and sit at a partially shaded table, watching the ranger shoot pool in the dusty courtyard. A single slab of unrefrigerated meat hangs from a metal hook in the window.

Eventually we are accepted and shown into the unkept backyard. The ranger joins our escort and remarks that the dogs we suggested would protect us were the ‘leopard’s favorite snack’.
